I have a theory about Kodak and Sears Portrait Studios - they have brainwashed us into believing that an 8x10 is a big print and an 11x14 is a huge print. I want you to know that they have lied to you my friends.
An 8 x10 is a relativley small print size in comparison to your wall. If you don't believe me cut out a piece of paper to 8x10 - stick it on your wall. Now take a piece of paper that is 20x24 put it in the same place. Which looks better?
When does an 8x10 sized print work really well? When you are setting an image on a desk or shelf. When you are clustering several images together in a grouping.
I believe that decorating your home with works of art featuring your family is one of the most beautiful, fashionable and artistic things you can do to personalize your decor. There is nothing I enjoy more than going to someone's home and seeing large works of art on the wall that feature the people they love.
Here is something I know to be a fact - I have never heard a customer say, wow, that 16x20 is just too large. I wish I had gotten it smaller. I NEVER hear someone say, I wish I had gone smaller - often it's the oposite even when ordering large - they wish they had gone larger.
Investment is a factor for some people in deciding to order smaller prints, I understand this but I challenge you to really think about what you value. Do you value quality? Do you value art? Do you love decorating your home in a way that truly reflects your family and it's unique style? You are not investing in pictures, you are investing in works of art that are heirloom quality and will be handed down for generations to come.
Take Amy - I love walking through Amy's home - Amy always purchases the sessions discs so she can order her own portrait products. I am continually amazed by the beautiful art work she is displaying in her home. She has mulitple larger prints displayed all over the house and they make a wonderful focal point in her decor. I have included an "outtake" from one of her in home portrait sessions that clearly shows 4 16x20's being displayed in her living room.
If you have large prints from Roberts Family Photography displayed in your home I would love to see them! Let us know so we can come out and photograph your space!
For more on this subject check out this blog post from one of my favorite photographers Tara Whitney.

She is featuring some wall art in her customers homes that show a really nice use of groupings of smaller print sizes for impact mixed with larger prints on the wall throughout the home.
Why don't you order larger prints, or do you? I would love to hear your comments!
